Idaho-Montana District

Opera Idaho proudly hosts the Idaho–Montana District of the Eric & Dominique Laffont Competition, a program of the Metropolitan Opera that identifies and supports the most promising young opera singers in the country. Emerging artists from Idaho, Montana, and neighboring regions travel to Boise to perform for a distinguished panel of judges and compete for cash prizes and a place in the regional round. 

Many of today’s leading opera stars first stepped into the spotlight through this competition, including Renée Fleming, Susan Graham, Lawrence Brownlee, Jamie Barton, Anthony Roth Costanzo, Lisette Oropesa, and Nadine Sierra.

The public is invited to attend the competition performances. Audiences will experience an intimate, recital-style event as each singer performs two arias with piano; offering a rare glimpse into the future of opera.
